NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF CONFARTIGIANATO CERAMICS NOMINATED

ROME – An excellence of Salento craftsmanship is now at the helm of the “ceramics” category of Confartigianato Imprese. Antonio Colì, a 43-year-old from Cutrofiano and manager of the renowned family business “Fratelli Colì,” has been elected national president of ceramicists.

The Salento ceramist, elected during the latest assembly held in Rome, will serve for the next four-year term. Alongside him are Davide Servadei (Emilia Romagna), who served as president in the last term, Arianna Giannoni (Tuscany), Giovanni Pietro Rampini (Umbria), and Maria Teresa Maroso (Veneto), all members of the council.

Since 2009, Colì has been the provincial president of the “Artistic, Traditional and Quality Craftsmanship” category of Confartigianato Imprese Lecce and has been the regional president of the Ceramics category since 2012. He is also a member of the board of directors of the guarantee cooperative “L’Artigiana” and has served as provincial president of the ceramics consortium.

“In order to further enhance the associative activities for the benefit of the category,” Colì states, “it is essential to constantly monitor the economic landscape of the ceramics sector in Italy, implementing and strengthening current research activities, also with the support of Italian universities and other relevant bodies. It is crucial,” he adds, “for the development of the category to establish and intensify relationships with foreign partners, through various institutional initiatives both of a cultural nature (for example, organising themed conferences) and with commercial purposes (such as workshops and trade fairs).”

The mayor of Cutrofiano, Oriele Rolli, and the municipal councillor for Productive Activities, Tommaso Campa, express their heartfelt satisfaction. “One of our fellow citizens,” say Rolli and Campa, “has been elected to the top of such an important and vital category for our productive fabric. His appointment is a prestigious recognition of the passion he has demonstrated over many years of activity. We wish him,” they conclude, “to continue his career with the same enthusiasm and commitment.”

GIUSEPPE COLÌ WORLD CHAMPION OF TURNERS 2014

07.09.2014

We are proud to announce to the world that Giuseppe Colì has been crowned World Champion of Turners 2014 tonight in Faenza!

As part of the cultural programme of the fourth edition of Argillà Italia, the 32nd edition of the Mondial Tornianti took place in Faenza on 6th and 7th September, a historic competition among Italian and foreign turners, relaunched in a renewed format that captivated the audience present at Argillà.

On Sunday 7th September, it was time for the World Technical Championship, where turners competed to create the tallest cylinder and the widest bowl: a spectacle that transcended competition, with the works taking shape on the lathe in front of a crowded Piazza Nenni (formerly Molinella).

At 6.00 PM, the awards ceremony took place, attended by Mayor Giovanni Malpezzi, Vice Mayor and President of the Faenza Ceramic Authority Massimo Isola, and Senator and President of AiCC Stefano Collina, along with members and volunteers from the Organising Committee, partners, and sponsors of the event (Cibas Impasti, Colorobbia, Rivista D’A, Strada della Romagna). FAQs

Some of the questions you may have about the world of ceramics are likely shared by others. We’ve selected the most frequently asked questions we’ve received and provided the answers below.

  • WHY DO SOME PRODUCTS THAT SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME DESIGN HAVE DIFFERENT PRICES?

There can be various reasons. A piece can be crafted on a potter's wheel or through other manual processes, or it can be pressed. Naturally, a handcrafted item is more expensive than one made mechanically.

The same logic applies to the decoration. There are two main types: hand-painted decoration and decal decoration. Decal decoration does not require great artistic skill, as it involves applying a film using specific techniques. On the other hand, manual decoration on ceramics is far more complex, even compared to other techniques.

That said, another crucial variable must be introduced: the "honesty" of the producer, who may be adept at selling a pressed item as if it were handmade.

  • HOW CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DECAL AND A HAND-PAINTED DESIGN?

Recognising a decal from a hand-painted decoration is very simple. With a basic magnifying glass, it is enough to observe the shading of the decoration itself. On a decal's shading, you will notice the grid of the frame, whereas on a hand-painted decoration, you will see a linear shading.

Sometimes this inspection can even be done without a magnifying glass when the decoration is sufficiently simple to observe.

  • HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A PRODUCT WAS MADE ON A POTTER'S WHEEL OR PRESSED?

Distinguishing a lathe-turned product from a handmade one is not easy. On a handmade item, you will usually notice internal streaks caused by the artisan's fingerprints, while the surface of a machine-made item is perfectly smooth. Unfortunately, special moulds have now been created that give the same result as "handmade".

An almost "foolproof" method is the following: if you place several handmade items of the same model side by side, they should differ, even slightly, in the fundamental measurements (height, diameter, etc.).

  • WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TERRACOTTA AND MAJOLICA?

It’s easy to confuse the meaning of ceramic, terracotta, and majolica! First of all, ceramic refers to any product made.

  • WHY DO YOU CLAIM TO HAVE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY SINCE 1650?

According to the property records of the Province of Lecce, in 1650, a certain Andrea Colì owned a workshop where he worked with terracotta.

On this note, we present the Colì genealogy (research carried out by Dr Vincenzo Ligori and published in the book "Cutrofiano, l'argilla, la terra, la pietra", Congedo Publishers): Andrea (1650), Oronzio Giuseppe (1683), Paolino (1736), Antonio (1769), Pasquale (1808), Gaetano (1844), Angelo Pasquale (1874), Antonio (1917), the brothers Donato and Rocco, with their sons Antonio, Donato, Massimo, Giuseppe, and Giovanni are the owners of the Colì Group (FRATELLI COLI' S.n.c. and FRATELLI COLI' S.r.l.).

  • WHY DOES FIREPROOF CERAMIC OFTEN CRACK EVEN ON FIRST USE?

When using ceramic ovenware, certain precautions are essential to make it last longer and to fully enjoy the benefits in terms of taste and authenticity.

First of all, only the first time, it is necessary to immerse the ovenware in lukewarm water for 12 hours. Afterwards, it is enough to avoid thermal shocks, such as placing hot ceramics on wet surfaces or under cold water.

After washing, let it dry upside down before putting it away in the cupboard. It should be noted that crazing of the glaze is normal and does not affect its use.

All Colì ovenware comes with a label indicating the various usage methods with some practical advice.

  • WHAT IS IMPRUNETA TERRACOTTA?

The name Impruneta derives from the area where the clay is extracted, located in Tuscany, with its primary characteristic being its high resistance. This material is renowned worldwide and recognised as the best quality clay available; it's no coincidence that objects made with Impruneta clay are also expensive, but well worth the money for those who demand the best from terracotta. Impruneta terracotta is also protected by a consortium that requires the use of this material only within the same Impruneta area. Those who purchase an Impruneta product are aware that they are buying a high-quality item that can only be made in a particular area of Tuscany.

  • HOW DO YOU REMOVE WHITE SALT DEPOSITS FROM TERRACOTTA POTS?

This happens when the mineral salts from the soil inside the pot naturally filter through the walls and, once transferred to the outside, dry in contact with the air.

You can, however, easily restore the pot to its original appearance by washing it with a solution of water and 10% hydrochloric acid (available in any hardware store) and rinsing it thoroughly.

  • WHAT ABOUT THOSE GREEN STAINS?

Those "green stains" consist of moss that grows mainly on the pots whose sides are never exposed to the sun. It is easy to see that the plant suffers no damage; in fact, some people like it, as it gives the whole set a weathered and antique appearance.

If you wish to remove them, simply wash the pot thoroughly with water and bleach, without needing to remove the plant.

  • WHY IS THE PLASTIC POTS MARKET GROWING COMPARED TO TERRACOTTA POTS? ARE THEY BETTER?

Recently, we have witnessed a real revolution in the world of "green thumbs". The demand for plant pots has shifted from terracotta pots to plastic ones. The reasons are various:

    - ease of transport and use, even by less physically strong individuals,

    - a significantly lower cost than other terracotta containers,

    - due to the light weight, they can also be used on terraces without compromising the structure of the building itself.

    However, beware of the drawbacks:

    - the plant categorically rejects the plastic pot as its habitat—how would you feel if you were wearing a plastic shirt? (imagine it both in summer and winter),

    - the image you get with a terracotta pot is unthinkable with plastic. Even though there are resin pots on the market that are almost identical to terracotta ones, don't overlook a fundamental factor: the price, almost the same as terracotta pots!

Therefore, it’s crucial to pay close attention when purchasing pots. Everything becomes much simpler if we empathise with our beloved plant!

  • WHY THE ROOSTER LOGO?

The rooster logo was chosen from many options, all linked to the symbolism of Salentine ceramics, the land where the company is based. The aim was to ensure that the brand itself would represent the company's origin—a land rich in art, culture, history, and, above all, a strong will to succeed.

  • WHAT IS HIGH-RESISTANCE MAJOLICA?

In 2002, the company made a fundamental leap in quality, changing both the raw material and the manufacturing processes. It did so, demonstrating a strong marketing orientation, to meet the expectations of consumers who today want more from majolica—greater resistance (about double) without sacrificing the aesthetic qualities of traditional handcrafted products. Thus, the "M.A.R. - HIGH-RESISTANCE MAJOLICA" was born, with a logo alongside the factory's mark to signify the use of the new raw material in the product lines where it is featured. Although this is a revolutionary and ground-breaking innovation, this exceptional novelty is presented with traditional sobriety and discretion. The M.A.R. is distinguished by its round logo with a discus thrower at the centre and the words HIGH-RESISTANCE MAJOLICA around the edge. Beware of imitations!

  • HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A PRODUCT IS MADE BY FRATELLI COLÌ?

Every Colì product bears the rooster symbol on a circular background. This varies depending on the product:

    - placed on the exterior base in the case of tableware;

    - stamped with a punch on both garden items and ovenware.

One must be very careful: SOME COMPANIES IMITATE THE "COLÌ Maioliche e Terrecotte dal 1650" BRAND (duly registered) THROUGH SOME "TOUCH-UPS", such as a "pseudo-rooster" on different bases, etc.

This pleases us in a way: when something is liked, it is imitated, and the more it is liked, the more it is imitated. It is important for anyone purchasing an imitation product to be aware of the lower quality and many other small details that distinguish an original product from others.
